October 22nd, 2011 – Wheaton 34, Roger Williams University 17

Wheaton tallied its third victory this past Saturday in a grueling match against Roger Williams University.  From the onset of the match the Lyons were able to keep Roger Williams on the back foot with strategic kicking by flyhalf Joseph Roys and good control of the ball in the ruck by forwards like freshman Dimitri Rodrigo. Wheaton Jumped out to an early lead with a try by Robert Fox and then maintained that lead with additional tries by Mac Mills and Craig Polizzi. A focus for the team in practice this week, as they prepare for their final game against UMass Dartmouth on Sunday, will be mental mistakes because penalties and tackling were a major issue for the Lyons against Roger Williams

October 8th, 2011 – Wheaton 13, Bryant University 10

Though missing a huge part of its team due to unavoidable conflicts and injuries, Wheaton Men’s Rugby pulled out a tough victory in their highly anticipated game against Bryant University. Besides a few mental mistakes that resulted in two unconverted Bryant tries, Wheaton’s defense held strong the entire game with players Sam Gipstein, Jake Pomerantz, Micah Malenfant and Ezra Krechmer stepping up to make giant tackles. After slicing through Bryant’s defense, Sam Lawrence ran the length of the field and offloaded to Joseph Roys for the team’s first try and Joseph Roys soon followed up with a successful penalty kick. Within the final ten minutes of the game Lawrence took the ball out of the back of the ruck and dove into the try zone to score Wheaton’s winning try. Next weekend brings what is expected to be Wheaton’s toughest game of the season again Salve Regina, but with spirits riding high Wheaton ruggers feel that victory is achievable.
